The Father of His Country
Presidents Day is a United States federal holiday celebrated in honor of George Washington, "The Father of his Country" and the first President of the United States. It is also a state holiday in most of the US states where it is referred to by the names, such as “Presidents Day” and “Washington's and Lincoln's Birthday”. The holiday officially celebrates, Washington alone, Washington and Lincoln, or some other combination of U.S. presidents, generally variating upon the state. Some states celebrate the duet of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
In the everyday life, the holiday is widely known as "Presidents Day" (with the possible spelling "Presidents’ Day") and is often an occasion to celebrate all US presidents. Children are lucky, as some schools, which used to close for a single day for both Lincoln's and Washington's birthdays, now often close for the entire week (beginning with the Monday holiday) as a "mid-winter recess". For example, the New York City school district began doing so in the 1990s.
In Washington's adopted hometown (Alexandria, Virginia) celebrations are usually held all month long in February.
