The Romantic History of The Romantic Day
One of the most Romantic days in the year has a very long and exciting story behind it. There are several legends that are believed to be true, with the following one being the most popular:
… Under the rule of Claudius the Cruel, Rome needed a strong army, but it was difficult to get soldiers to join it. The Emperor believed that Roman men did not want to join the army because of their strong feelings to their wives and families. So, Claudius banned all marriages and engagements in Rome. A priest, named Valentine, realizing the injustice and feeling sorry for the young people in love, still continued to perform marriages in secret.
When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered him to death and the sentence was carried out on February 14, on or about the year 270. Legend also says that while in jail, Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, whom he had cured and who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine"...
For his great service, Valentine was named a Saint after his death.
There are lots of opinions whether the holiday was connected to love from the very beginning, however, gradually, February 14 became a date for exchanging love messages, poems and gifts such as flowers, candy, jewellery, toys and other romantic ideas. Don’t hesitate to express your thoughts, share your feelings or finally get it together and propose! “They lived happily ever after” works not only in fairy tales!
