Black Friday Coupon Codes & Deals 2020
24 Hours of Work in a Row
There are several versions of when and how the day's name originated from. The most popular takes us back to Philadelphia, where the “Black Friday” concept originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. Another explanation has come from retailers who traditionally operated the terms "in the red" at a financial loss times and "in the black" to indicate the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit and specifically on "Black Friday" - the start of the season sales.
For many years, it was common for retailers to open at 6:00 a.m., but in the late 2000s many had crept to 5:00 or even 4:00. This was taken to a new extreme in 2011, when several retailers opened at midnight for the first time. Today many stores open at 5-6 pm on Thanksgiving Day and stay open longer than 24 hours in a row.
However, despite terrific shopping opportunities, there is a lot of negativity towards such stores’ actions. Many buyers take the desire to save some money to another level - it has become common for prospective shoppers to camp out over the Thanksgiving holiday in an effort to take a place in front of the line and thus a better chance at getting desired items, which leads to crowding, crazy behaviour and aggression - there have been reports of violence, physical assaults and even deaths, occurring between shoppers on Black Friday 2020. Another reason for negativity is feeling sorry for the workers of the retail industry, who are forced to stay at their working places during the holiday and have no opportunity to spend this time with their families.
